OLD VINES IN THE SPOTLIGHT

DOMAINE VALLIS PETRA - CUVÉE SYMBIOSE

This organic wine is composed of Grenache (50%), Syrah (25%) and Mourvèdre (25%) grapes. The particularity of this red wine is that it is vinified in the "old way" as the winegrowers say, that is to say that there is no blending, the 3 grape varieties are vinified at the same time. This gives in mouth the spice of pepper, the smoothness of the fruit and the frank tannins.

The other particularity of this A.O.C Vacqueyras is that the grape varieties come from vines over 60 years old, and that the winemaker Nelly Boissel, lets the grapes rest for at least 4 weeks in the vat and waits another 6 months to bottle the wine. This wine will go very well with red meat, game, and cheese. It is one of the 3 red wines of Domaine Vallis Petra, a 10-hectare wine estate in organic farming since 2010.

This 10-hectare estate is in the Rhone Valley, in the territory of the protected designation of origin of Vacqueyras, a Côtes du Rhône cru. Vacqueyras, under the ancient name of "vallis quadreria" meaning "valley of stones", gives the origin of the name to the domain: "domaine Vallis petra". Nelly, a winemaker for 25 years, inherited this magnificent estate from her grandparents in 2007. She continues the well accomplished work of her grandmother while remaining rigorous and passionate. She has her own motto: "Where my feet are, there I belong" (Native American proverb). The vineyard is mainly located on a large alluvial terrace "les garrigues de Sarrians", essentially clay and limestone soil composed of gravel and red and brown clay at an altitude of about 120m.

Nelly is indeed a passionate person, and this is reflected in her wines. I met her during a tasting with another winemaker, she wanted to come because she was interested in working with me. It took a long time to get started, but now we are a good team, I respect the exclusivity of her wines, which are nevertheless in great demand. We have a lot of common projects for trade shows, we will be together at the Millésime Bio 2022 in Montpellier.
